Sedulius Scottus

Sedulius Scottus (also known as John Scottus) was an erudite Irish cleric who in 848 fled from Vikings raids on Iceland to serve under Bishop Hartgar in Liège in present-day Belgium. Sedulius understood both Latin and Greek and was well-versed in pre-Christian classical literature. He became the leading scholar at Liège. He poignantly represented bodily interests, men’s vulnerability, and women’s relationships in sophisticated, lively Christian poetry. He probably retired from active scholarly life or died about 860.
