insights on digital identity

Two points on digital identity and privacy from David Clark’s recent presentation:

  • Continuity-based familiarity is an identity structure that doesn’t require a third-party authority.  Communication takes place using technology that gives each communicative party a unique source signature in the particular communicative relationship, but not necessarily a global identification.  Parties recognize each other’s identities through their history of interaction with each other.
  • Google reportedly is getting more than 100 subpoenas PER DAY for information about queries from particular IP addresses.  Business have an incentive to structure their information collection in ways that lessen the value of legally compelled information disclosure. User privacy has business cost advantages.
