Smear the queer —
the guy with the ball was it.
All he had to do was drop
the ball, and we all would
attack the next
person who was it.

I remember “smear the queer.” Though, in my head, it was spelled, “Smeer the Queer” in order to be more, uh… alliterative?
Right up there with “Indian Rubber,” in terms of violent, badly named schoolyard games. “Indian Rubber” being the variant of “Pickle” where you were allowed to throw the ball at the runners. I remember yelling, “No face shots! No face shots!” a lot.
And, locally, we also played “Ass Ball,” where you pitched a tennis ball at a wall and the other guy/s had to pick it up before it crossed a certain line on the rebound. If you went for the ball and missed, you had to stand by the wall and let the other guy throw at your butt. There was a great deal of strategic discussion around the best stance to take in the punishment slot; bent over at the waist to avoid being hit in the head, sideways to present a smaller target, etc.
Ah, memories. Wasn’t childhood grand?
brings back the memories 🙂
